The partners involved in the meat processing demonstrator located in Sant Joan de Vilatorrada (Spain) are holding meetings with authorities belonging to different areas of the Catalan Government with the objective of explaining the goals of the AccelWater project, reporting the challenges identified during the first year of the project and, starting to work together to overcome the regulatory barriers related to water reuse in slaughterhouses and meat processing industries in Catalonia, and the valorisation of animal by-products generated in the meat processing sector through innovative treatment strategies. BETA TC, MAFRICA and INNOVACC aim to evince to the Catalan administration that the technological solutions proposed by the AccelWater project under a water-waste-energy nexus will boost the transition of the Catalan
agri-food sector towards the circular bioeconomy.
On the other hand, during the last months several meat processing industries belonging to the Catalan pork sector cluster (INNOVACC) have expressed their interest to know more details about the targets defined for the meat processing demonstrator in the AccelWater project and the technological approach to be applied for the valorisation of wastewater and solid wastes generated in MAFRICA ́s facilities. Reducing freshwater consumption in slaughterhouses and meat processing industries through the installation of innovative technologies which allow to obtain high quality reclaimed water with potential to be reused in the industrial area is identified by these companies as a goal to increase the sustainability of the meat processing sector.
Therefore, it is expected that the results obtained in the meat processing demonstrator can be replicated in other industries of this sector.
